I am using Nexplanon for birth control and I am bleeding irregularly, is this normal?
- Yes. The bleeding pattern with Nexplanon is unpredictable. You may or may not have a regular period, or you may not bleed at all.
I recently had a hormonal IUD (Mirena, Liletta, Kyleena or Skyla) inserted for contraception and I am bleeding almost daily, is this normal?

What is an Ovarian Cyst?
- Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs or pockets in an ovary or on its surface. Most ovarian cysts are known as functional cysts. Functional cysts are the follicles that grow every month in women in their childbearing years. They produce estrogen and progesterone and release an egg during ovulation. Functional cysts are harmless. Other types of cysts that grow on the ovary are the following:
- Dermoid cysts, contain tissues like skin, hair, and teeth. They are rarely cancerous.
- Endometriomas, are cysts filled with a chocolate brown substance and are seen in women with diagnosis of endometriosis.
- Cystadenomas are cysts filled with a watery or mucus-like substance and can grow very large.
The type of cyst you have may be determined by a physical exam, by imaging studies and blood tests. Functional cysts often resolve spontaneously. However persistent cysts or non-functional cyst may require further clinical evaluation. Malignant cysts are more common in older menopasual women and require clinical evaluation.
